"Crystals are capable of
receiving, containing, projecting, emanating, refracting
and reflecting light, which is the highest form of energy
in the physical universe."
Source: Katrina Raphaell, Crystal Enlightenment
There are several families of crystals. The quartz family
includes several of the most well known crystals: clear
quartz, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz and smokey quartz.
Each type of crystal has different energy properties and
frequencies which relate to different physical, emotional
and mental states. This means you can work with different
crystals depending on what is happening for you at the time.
Crystals are also good for helping to develop your intuition
and connect with higher states of awareness. Most shops
will provide information what each type of crystal can be
used for. If you are unsure, give me a call and I can help
out.
Crystals can be purchased in a polished or more natural
form. Small polished stones, or "tumble stones",
are the most common. These are small pieces of crystal that
have been polished in a tumbler for several weeks until
they are smooth and aesthetically pleasing. Tumble stones
are small enough to carry around or wear in jewellery and
are relatively inexpensive. They are easy to use for crystal
healing and balancing and are not too strong for beginners.
In there more natural state, you will find bigger chunks
of crystal that are not smoothly polished, like the picture
of the rose quartz, opposite. You will see crystals in clusters
(see clear quartz cluster above) or as parts of a geode,
like the picture of the amethyst below. The latter are very
expensive! More affordable and easier to work with are the
crystal points that come off the geodes or clusters. They
are referred to as single or double terminators, depending
on whether they have a point at one end only or at both
ends. If you are interested in crystals, there is a lot
of written material available about the special properties
of the different forms of clear quartz points and how you
can work with these crystals. It's amazing how attached
you become to your crystals and they become like dear friends!
Unless you are seeking a crystal for a specific purpose
or need, the best way to choose a crystal is to pick one
that you are particularly drawn to. Try and be led by your
intuition or gut feel, rather than logic or your head.
This same principle can be used on a daily
basis if you have a selection of stones. Choose a crystal
that you are drawn to on that particular day to carry around
with you or meditate with. You will probably find that different
crystals will appeal depending on how you are feeling or
the influence of a particular issue you are dealing with
at the time.
There are many other ways you can work with
crystals, for example using them to enhance focus in meditation,
clearing or setting the energy in a space, channeling, and
protecting against unwanted electromagnetic disturbance
(see Stress Management Tips below). They
can safely be used with plants, animals and children for
healing and balancing.
It is really important to clear your crystals regularly
as they readily absorb our (or our environment's) negative
energy. It is good practice to clear your chakra set of
crystals after each balance you do (see Something
Interesting section below).
