Overcoming Fears

There are many tools we can use to help us address fears. I have talked about some of these individually in past issues of my newsletter, but here I have summarised a few techniques that can specifically assist us with fears. Try them all, or experiment with ones you are particularly drawn to.

Some of these techniques need to be used regularly to gain the full benefit, so don't give up after one go if you're not feeling immediate relief. This is not an exhaustive list, so come and see me if you’re not getting the results you want.

Regardless of what you try, it is good practice to set a clear intention of what you want to clear before you start.

Breathing: Bring your fear to forefront of your awareness and notice your thoughts and any feelings/sensations in your body. Take several deep breaths, breathing into your fear. Keep your focus on the fear and any physical sensations until you notice some easing as you continue to take deep breaths.

Now try to image your energy expanding, rather than contracting into the fear. Repeat as necessary until you notice a gradual easing.

Acupressure: Locate a spot on the little finger side of your hand at the crease of your wrist. Apply firm pressure for 1-2 minutes on one hand and then the other. Repeat twice daily.

Flower Essences: The Bach Flower Remedy of Mimulus is good to use for known fears (eg fear of public speaking) while Aspen is appropriate to use when you don’t know what your fear is about. Rock Rose should be used in cases of terror.

If your prefer Bush Flower Essences, try Dog Rose and Crowea for fears and Grey Spider Flower for terror.

Emotional Stress Release: Place the palm of your hand over the upper part of your forehead (covering the 2 bumps) while you bring your fear to mind. Remain like that, continually focused on your fear until you feel it easing (or for 2-3 minutes).

Meditation: Meditate on your fear. Hold your awareness on your fear (using it as your point of focus) while breathing for at least 10 minutes. Allow yourself to be with whatever unfolds.

Visualize: Visualize placing your fear (or a symbol of your fear) in a box attached to a balloon. Imagine this balloon floating up into the air and off into the distance, taking your fear with it. See it going further and further away until it has disappeared.

TFT: For those of you who have done TFT with me, think of your fear and try tapping the following sequence [UE, UA, CB, 9 GAMUT Sq, UE, UA, CB, Eyeroll]. Repeat the sequence until you no longer get a diminishment in the intensity of the fear.

If the sequence has no effect, you will require a different sequence to address your fear. If this is the case, or you have not used TFT with me, please make an appointment to see me.

Stress Management Tips

Listening to soothing music is an excellent and effective way to de-stress. Any music that you enjoy and find relaxing is good to use, expecially before going to sleep.

Some music tracks and CDs have been written specifically to facilitate meditation, concentration, healing and relaxation. Some of my favourite CD's for these purposes have been released by composer John Levine. He calls his music Alphamusic because he wrote it specifically to encourage the brain to produce alpha waves (8-13Hz) which are a steady and calm frequency (like when you first wake up from a relaxed sleep or meditate). It is in this state, he says, that you are most likely to get creative insights and experiences.

John often has a stand at the Mind, Body Spirit expo where you can experience his music. His CD's can be ordered from his website www.silenceofmusic.com. My personal favourites that I often play in healing sessions are: Silence of Heart, Emerald Forest, Amber and Orange Grove Siesta.

Silence of Voice and Silence of Vision are all good for studying or when you need to concentrate for long periods of time.
